The Rt. Hon. Lord Patten CH Biography

Christopher Francis Patten completed his education at Balliol College Oxford, where he studied Modern History and was chosen as a Domus Exhibitioner. He also attended St. Benedict's School in Ealing. He received a Coolidge Traveling Scholarship to the United States in 1965. In 1966, he began working with the Conservative Research Department. When Lord Carrington and Lord Whitelaw led the Conservative Party from 1972 to 1974, he served as their political secretary and personal assistant after being seconded to the Cabinet Office in 1970. He was hired as the Conservative Research Department's youngest-ever director in 1974, a position he maintained until 1979. In May 1979, Lord Patten was chosen to serve as the Member of Parliament for Bath, a position he maintained until April 1992. He published The Tory Case, a study of conservatism, in 1983. Lord Patten was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Northern Ireland Office following the June 1983 general election, and in September 1985 he was named Minister of State for the Department of Education and Science. He was appointed Minister for Overseas Development in the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in September 1986. In 1989, he was made a member of the Privy Council, and in 1998, he was made a Companion of Honor. He was appointed Secretary of State for the Environment in July 1989. He was named Chairman of the Conservative Party and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in November 1990.
