The Kentucky Headhunters Biography

An American country music and Southern rock band called The Kentucky Headhunters. Itchy Brother was formed in 1968 by the Young brothers, Richard on rhythm guitar and Fred on percussion, together with Greg Martin on lead guitar and Anthony Kenney on drums (bass guitar vocals). From 1973 to 1976, Martin was replaced by James Harrison, and the Itchy Brother continued to play until 1982. The Kentucky Headhunters were formed in 1986 with the addition of the Phelps brothers, siblings Ricky Lee (lead vocals, harmonica) and Doug (bass guitar, backing vocals), to the Young brothers and Martin. The band recorded four straight Top 40 country hits after Mercury Records released their debut album, Pickin' on Nashville, in 1989. Mercury Electric's second record. After the release of Barnyard, the Phelps brothers split up to create Brother Phelps since Barnyard did not do as well commercially. Before the band left Mercury, Kenney re-joined, and Mark S. Orr took over on lead vocals for the albums The Best of The Kentucky Headhunters: Still Pickin' and 1993's Rave On!! After Orr had left, Doug Phelps replaced Orr as the album's lead vocalist in 1996. Along with Big Boss Man and a second collection Flying Under the Radar on CBuJ Entertainment, he also played lead guitar on the albums Songs from the Grass String Ranch and Soul from Audium Entertainment. By the time the band's 2011 album Dixie Lullabies was released, Doug had replaced Kenney as bass guitarist.
