Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner founded the Eagles in 1971. They worked with producer Glyn Johns to record their first LP, Eagles (1972). The tracks Take It Easy, Peaceful Easy Feeling, and Witchy Woman would become recognized for the country-rock sound that Johns had steered them towards. Their first number-one song, Best of My Love, was from their third album, On the Border (1974). Over the following six years, a string of number-one singles would follow that tune. The Eagles changed producers during the recording of On the Border from Johns to Bill Szymczyk, who allowed them a more significant creative license and was willing to make the records more rocking. Lyin' Eyes, which appeared on One of These Nights (1975), earned them their first Grammy, and the album's title tune became their subsequent number-one smash. Their first gold record came from the album's track Take It to the Limit. With Hotel California, the ensemble becomes even more in tune with the hard rock genre (1976). The record was a huge hit, selling more copies than Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, the best-selling album at the time. With its excellent musicianship, creative vocals, and pop-culture appeal, it produced hit after smash, securing its position in music history.
