The three guys, Billy Davis Jr., Ron Townson, and Lamonte McLemore, all went their ways as youths while growing up in St. Louis, Missouri. Still, they ultimately ended up in Los Angeles to be incredibly wealthy. Billy studied at Washington Tech and performed in several gospel and soul groups. He eventually ended himself in Los Angeles, where he founded his club and wanted to sign with Motown's West Coast recording company. While serving in the Navy, Lamonte developed his baseball and photography skills to discover his love for singing. Finally, Ron has sung on the show from the start. His urge to sing led him to leave Lincoln University and travel to Los Angeles. While photographing her, Lamonte McLemore first encountered Marilyn McCoo, the winner of the Miss Bronze Talent Award. Marilyn was born in New Jersey and spent her formative years there. She usually wanted to work in the entertainment industry, but her parents insisted she finishes her education. She left UCLA and accepted Lamonte's invitation to participate in the group he was organizing. To complete their well-balanced vocal sound, which already included Billy's gospel, beat, and blues background, Ron's drama, Lamonte's jazz, and Marilyn's jazz and pop, they needed another female part. Florence LaRue, the winner of the Miss Bronze Talent Award in the year following Marilyn's victory, was filmed when McLemore decided to invite her to the party he was planning. She first declined the invitation since she had left Cal State University, Los Angeles, and had just started teaching. She and Marilyn first joined the group as a social outing, with McCoo seeking a performing singing career and LaRue, despite everything, yearning for an acting career.
