Terry Virts, an astronaut, was raised outside Baltimore in Columbia, Maryland. Being an only kid, he had known from reading his first book on the Apollo missions in kindergarten that he wanted to be an astronaut.
He continued to do well in school, graduating with a master's in aeronautical science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 1997 and a bachelor of science in mathematics (with a minor in French) from the United States Air Force Academy in 1989.
