About Terrence Roberts
Terrence Roberts Biography
One of the Little Rock Nine, a group of African-American students who were the first ever to enroll in classes at Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957, was Terrence James Roberts. President Bill Clinton presented him and the other members of the Little Rock Nine with the Congressional Gold Medal in 1999. Roberts and eight other African American students (collectively called the "Little Rock Nine") failed to enroll in Little Rock Central High School on September 4, 1957. Despite the National Guard's presence, a 400-person irate crowd encircled the school. The local police were left to look out for the students once the National Guard was disbanded. On September 23, 1957, as the kids tried to enter the school, a crowd of roughly 1000 people surrounded it. President Dwight D. Eisenhower deployed American Army forces to escort the kids to school the following day as a precaution. Despite staying at the school during the entire academic year, the military could not stop violent acts there. Because Little Rock's high schools were subsequently shut down in 1958–1959, Roberts finished his senior year in Los Angeles, California. At California State University, Los Angeles, Roberts completed his study and earned a Bachelor of Arts in sociology there in 1967. In 1970, the UCLA School of Social Welfare awarded him a Master's degree in social welfare; in 1976, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, awarded him a Ph.D. in psychology. He served as an instructor at Pacific Union Institution, a private liberal arts college in Napa Valley, California, from 1975 to 1977. Roberts oversaw the mental health department at St. Helena Hospital and Health Center from 1977 until 1985. He served as the assistant dean of the UCLA School of Social Welfare from 1985 until 1993. Roberts joined Antioch University Los Angeles in 1993 and worked as a core professor and program co-chair until 2008. He presently serves as Principal of Terrence Roberts Consulting, a management consulting business.
