He created a miniature version of the play and staged sequences that he subsequently found to be more true to reality. After more than two dozen plays and stages, an enormous profession has grown out of McNally's first conceptions. He is the author of notable spaces, including Love! Valor! Sympathy! (1994), which received the Tony Award for Best Play in 1995, and Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune (1987), which he transformed into a noteworthy film. The Nation saw it as a shockingly Chekovian work, or, in other words, as necessary and substantial but also beautifully crafted at the same time. Over the years, McNally's plays have been characterized as satirical and subtly humorous, but more recently, they have also come to be recognized as kind, expressive, and energizing. Swoosie Kurtz, an on-screen persona who has appeared in his plays, has claimed that he crafts the drama of the human heart. In addition to winning two Tony Awards for Best Play, McNally has received two Guggenheim Fellowships and several OBIE Awards. He is a resident of New York.
