Tensie Whelan Biography

The Rainforest Alliance's interim head is Tensie Whelan. Since 1990, she has worked with the Rainforest Alliance, initially as a load-up member and then as a specialist until becoming the formal head in 2000. Tensie has been employed in the natural world for more than 25 years. During that time, she served as the official executive of the New York League of Conservation Voters and the National Audubon Society's vice president of protection statistics. In addition, Whelan was the managing editorial manager of Ambio, a global ecological dairy based in Stockholm, and a writer and specialist in environmental exchanges in Costa Rica. Before becoming the Rainforest Alliance's formal leader, Whelan worked as a management consultant for non-profit organizations, including the Environmental Defense Fund. Tensei is a co-member of the Sustainable Food Lab's governing council and serves on the Social Accountability International Unilever Sustainable Sourcing Advisory Board's warning sheets. She has a bachelor's degree in political theory from New York University and a master's degree in international correspondence from the School of International Service at American University.
