Tatyana McFadden Biography

On April 21, 1989, Tatyana McFadden was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. Spina bifida, an innate condition that deadened her from the waist up, was present when she was born. She spent the first six years of her life walking on her hands since her mother had placed her in a halfway home because it was too impoverished even to consider getting her a wheelchair. The doctors informed her that she was nearly destroyed and had little chance of survival: Deborah McFadden, the U.S. Health Department's chief of disabilities was visiting Russia when she met her at the halfway house. Tatyana was accepted by Deborah, a single mother, and taken to Baltimore. McFadden participated in various activities as she grew up to build her muscles, including swimming, gymnastics, wheelchair basketball, sled hockey, and Olympic-style sports. McFadden plays wheelchair basketball for the University of Illinois and attends the university while pursuing a degree in human development and family studies. At the age of 8, McFadden started hustling. She competed in the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, Greece, where she finished fifth in the women's 400-meter T54 event and was eliminated in the first round of the women's 800-meter T54 event. She also won a silver medal in the women's 100-meter T54 event and a bronze medal in the women's 200-meter T54 event. She also competed at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China, where she finished sixth in the women's 100-meter T54 event and won silver medals in the women's 200-meter, 400-meter, and 800-meter T54 events. She also won a bronze medal for women's 4 x 100-meter relay in the T53-54 category.
