The oldest of eight children, Tashera Jamilia Draughn, was born in New York City on April 10, 1971. Her Brooklyn-born father and Panamanian-born mother relocated her and her family to Yonkers, New York, a suburb of New York City, in 1978. The Draughn family struggled, despite Yonkers being a better place to live than Manhattan's drug-filled streets. Due to her parents' struggles with stress and medicines, Tashera and her family were abandoned in 1985, leaving Tashera to take on the role of mother while attending class and working odd jobs for cash under the table to support her family. After graduating from Lincoln High School in Yonkers, New York, in 1989, she started seeing her loving partner and eventual husband Earl Simmons (Def Jam recording craftsman DMX). Contrary to the opinions of most family members on the Dark Man X, Tashera remained with Simmons until they were married in late 1998, following the rapper's next major contract with Def Jam - his presentation album It's Dark, and Hell is Hot. According to Tashera, marriage is complicated and is made more difficult by the scrutiny of flashing news cameras, the media, and admirers. Although raising seven siblings helped me develop my character, it didn't prepare me for what my life would ultimately be.
