Tarell, The Brother/Sister Plays trilogy by Alvin McCraney, which includes The Brothers Size, In the Red and Brown Water, and Marcus: Or the Secret of Sweet, is his most well-known work. Other plays include Wig Out, Choir Boy, and Head of Passes! The Oscar-winning film Moonlight, directed by Barry Jenkins and based on Tarell's play In Moonlight Black Boys Looks Blue, also won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for McCraney and Jenkins. In addition, the movie has received numerous other awards, including the Human Rights Campaign's Visionary Arts Award, the WGA Award for Best Original Screenplay, the NAACP Image Award for Best Independent Film, the Gotham Award for Best Feature, the Golden Globe for Best Drama, and six Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Picture and Best Screenplay. Tarell has also collaborated with Playtone, HBO, and Disney on TV and movie projects. In addition to the Whiting Award, Steinberg Playwright Award, Evening Standard Award, New York Times Outstanding Playwright Award, Paula Vogel Playwriting Award, Windham Campbell Award, and Doris Duke Artist Award, Tarell has also received a MacArthur "Genius" Grant. He was a previous resident playwright at New Dramatists and served as the international writer-in-residence with the Royal Shakespeare Company from 2008 to 2010. He is a part of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company's ensemble and the Miami-based Teo Castellanos/D-Projects. Tarell holds degrees from the Yale School of Drama, the New World School of the Arts, and the Theatre School at DePaul University. He also has an honorary doctorate from the University of Warwick. He established a three-year initiative in collaboration with UM, Miami-Dade County, and the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center while serving as a professor of theatre and civic engagement at the University of Miami. He was appointed Playwright in Residence at Yale Repertory Theater and the new Chairman of the Playwriting Department at Yale School of Drama.
