About Tadatoshi Akiba
Tadatoshi Akiba Biography
Mayor Akiba is Hiroshima's first elected non-native mayor. The fact that the survivors of the historic bombing have accepted him as a voice for their cause and legacy is a testament to his long history of resistance to nuclear weapons. The mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki founded the Mayors for Peace group in 1982 to unite and facilitate the towns that supported the complete elimination of nuclear weapons. At the moment, Mayor Akiba serves as the organization's president. Its main objective is to promote awareness of atomic weapons on a global scale. The Mayors for Peace are formally committed to ending hunger and poverty, protecting refugees, respecting human rights, protecting the environment, and addressing other issues that endanger peaceful coexistence. Mayor Akiba is recognized for expanding the membership of the Mayors for Peace to include over 730 communities in 111 nations and regions worldwide that have publicly voiced support for their mission via his strength of character and perseverance. Mayor Akiba's advocacy for nuclear disarmament benefits Hiroshima's reputation as an International Peace Culture City. Abolition 2000, the European Parliament, the United States Conference of Mayors, the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), and the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki all passed resolutions in support of the Emergency Campaign to Ban Nuclear Weapons, which the Mayors for Peace launched in November 2003. Consequently, the Mayors for Peace received the Global Citizen Award from the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation. The 2020 Vision Campaign was started in the achieve-free world in 2020, another name for the initiative. Mayor Akiba headed a delegation of municipal leaders from 12 nations to the NPT Preparatory Committee Meeting at UN Headquarters in New York as the first stage in this effort. This delegation helped make the nuclear danger an essential concern by persuading the government representatives. Their next objective was to organize anti-nuclear protests in New York in May 2005 and in hundreds of other cities worldwide on August 6, 2005, the 60th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. They also intend to bring 100 mayors to New York for the NPT Review Conference in May 2005. Mayor Akiba, a former professor who has held positions at Tufts University in Boston and American University in Washington, DC, is a staunch supporter of the introduction of Hiroshima-Nagasaki Peace Study programs at colleges and institutions all over the globe. The towns of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are eager to preserve the legacy for future generations, given that the average age of A-bomb survivors is now above 72. Mayor Akiba has been pleading with university presidents and academics worldwide to incorporate the bombing's historical importance into their curricula. The Mayors for Peace 2020 Vision Campaign can also arrange for additional speakers through American Program Bureau. They include Steve Leeper, a US representative for Mayors for Peace, and Mr. Aaron Tovish, the organization's global campaign manager.
