T. Berry Brazelton Biography

After earning his medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City in 1943, Dr. Brazelton accepted a clinical intern position. His clinical residency at Massachusetts General Hospital began in 1945, and he relocated to Boston to start his pediatric training at Children's Hospital. He trained in child psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and the James Jackson Putnam Children's Center due to his passion for child development. He thus filled in as a Fellow under Professor Jerome Bruner at the Harvard University Center for Cognitive Studies. When he established the Child Development Unit, a pediatric training and research center at Children's Hospital, the path toward integrating his dual specialties—essential consideration pediatrics and child psychiatry—was completed. Dr. Brazelton has disseminated more than 200 logical articles and sections. His research has focused on five main areas: (1) unique differences between babies, (2) the commitment of the neonate to the parent-newborn child dyad, (3) multifaceted investigations of baby behavior and early child-rearing practices, (4) the significance of early mediation to at-risk newborn children and their families, and (5) the openings introduced in the early stages for strengthening families.
