Swen Nater Biography

Swen Nater tried out for his high school ball group at age 64 but was rejected. He joined the group at Cypress College in Orange County, California, at 69. He achieved All-America status in a single season and still maintains the 39-game single-game bounce-back record at California Community College. Swen was required by UCLA's John Wooden, who admitted it. Anyway, he only practiced throughout the preceding year and sat in Bill Walton's place for the junior and senior years. But it didn't stop Swen from pursuing his b-ball goals. He joined the ABA, where he became Rookie of the Year, a double-cross All-Star, and led the class in bounce back and field objective rate before being selected in the first round of the NBA (the first player not to have started a school game and be selected in the first round). When he transitioned to the NBA, he also led that class in comebacks. He still maintains the unmatched records for a measured response in one part of a game (18) and the Milwaukee Bucks' single-game comeback record (33) today. After retiring from professional baseball, Swen Nater joined Christian Heritage College as the head coach and athletic director, leading the Hawks to a national championship. Five books have been written by Swen, including You Haven't Taught Until They Have Learned, which he co-wrote with Ronald Gallimore and is an analysis of John Wooden's teaching methods, John Wooden's UCLA Offense, which he co-wrote with Coach Wooden, and Playing Big, which he co-wrote with Pete Newell.
