Susannah Heschel Biography

At Dartmouth College, Susannah Heschel holds the title of Eli Black Professor of Jewish Studies. Her research focuses on the history of biblical study, anti-Semitism, and Jewish-Christian interactions in Germany in the 19th and 20th centuries. Her works include The Aryan Jesus: Christian Theologians and the Bible in Nazi Germany and Abraham Geiger and the Jewish Jesus (University of Chicago Press), which received a National Jewish Book Award (Princeton University Press). Additionally, she has taught at Case Western Reserve University and Southern Methodist University. In addition to Princeton, Heschel has served as a visiting professor at the universities of Frankfurt and Cape Town. She has also received various awards, including fellowships from the Ford Foundation, Carnegie Foundation, and the National Humanities Center. She was a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin from 2011 to 2012. She has been awarded four honorary doctorates by academic institutions in the US, Canada, and Germany. She is currently a Guggenheim Fellow working on a book about the development of Jewish study on Islam in Europe. She was chosen as an American Society for the Study of Religion member in 2015. She is the author of more than a hundred essays. She has collaborated with Robert P. Ericksen to edit many volumes, including Betrayal: German Churches in the Holocaust and Insider/Outsider: American Jews and Multiculturalism (with David Biale and Michael Galinsky). She is a member of the Trinity College Board of Trustees and the academic advisory board for the Berlin Center for Jewish Studies.
