Susan Powell Biography

Susan received the title of Miss America in 1981 in September of 1980. She has appeared in front of people in theatres, playhouses, show corridors, and on address platforms all across the country in the years after the end of her rule. She appeared opposite Larry Gatlin in his musical Texas Flyer during her performance at Theater Under the Stars in Houston. She also played the champion Margarita in the world premiere of the new musical Zorro. With the Seattle Opera, Miss Powell made her operatic debut as Adele in Die Fledermaus. At the New York City Opera, she played Johanna in Harold Prince's production of Sweeney Todd. She has also performed driving roles for the Baltimore Opera and the Cincinnati, Augusta, Syracuse, Connecticut, Gold Coast, and Nevada Tulsa companies. In addition, she has performed as a featured soloist with several orchestras, including those from Philadelphia, Tampa, Indianapolis, Tulsa, and Nashville. Chicago, Richmond, and Oklahoma City. In 1993, Susan performed with the Boston Pops, and John Williams eventually selected her to perform with him as the lead soloist in one of the Pops' last performances. Susan returned to the Boston Pops in the winter of 1999, accompanying them on their yearly occasion visit under the direction of Keith Lockhart. She collaborated with Maestro Lockhart as a guest soloist this season with the New Japan Philharmonic in Tokyo and the Utah Symphony in Salt Lake City.
