Susan L. Taylor spent 27 years as the editor-in-chief of Essence magazine and is credited with creating the brand. After that, she decided to leave publishing to devote her life to creating an organization that ended the intergenerational neediness among African Americans. To "alter the expected destiny predicted for our children who are struggling along the margins and live with the humiliation of poverty," the National CARES Mentoring Movement was founded.
