Susan Kare Biography

In the 1980s, Susan Kare, a craftswoman, and visual designer created a sizable portion of the interface parts for the Apple Macintosh. She was one of the original employees of NeXT, founded by Steve Jobs after he left Apple in 1985, serving as the Creative Director. Beginning in 1982, a member of the initial Apple Macintosh configuration group, Kare, worked at Apple Computer. Kare's first job was to organize UI designs and textual styles for the Macintosh development group. Later, she worked as a Creative Director for Tom Suiter, the director of Apple Creative Services. She created various fonts, symbols, and original marketing materials for the first Macintosh operating system. Unquestionably, descendants of her significant work can still be seen in various PC designs, notably icons like the Paint Bucket, Lasso, and Grabber. An early pioneer of pixel craftsmanship, the most notable works from her time with Apple include the Chicago typeface, which is the most noticeable UI typeface found in Classic Mac OS and was also used in the first four generations of the Apple iPod interface, the Geneva typeface, the first monospace Monaco typeface, Clarus, the Dogcow, the Happy Mac, and the image on the Command key on Apple consoles.
