About Susan G. Finley
Susan G. Finley Biography
The longest-serving woman in NASA, Susan G. Finley, has worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) since January 1958. Finley began her employment with the research center as a human PC calculating rocket dispatch orders by hand two days before Explorer 1 was launched. She is now filling in for NASA's Deep Space Network as a systems engineer (DSN). She has taken part in JPL's exploration of the Sun, Moon, planets, and other Solar System bodies. Finley spent a considerable amount of time attending Scripps College with the initial intent of becoming an engineer. She attempted to acquire craftsmanship but later realized that construction was her destiny because of her enormous design insight and talents in mathematics and registered courses. She studied the humanities during her academic career, which helped her succeed as a systems engineer. As a smaller framework inside a larger one is referred to as a subsystem, her role requires her to focus on more specific aspects of the technologies she uses at JPL. She graduated from Scripps College at age 21 and joined Convair in Pomona, California, as a specialist in a thermodynamics group. Finley made sacrifices in her line of work at the beginning of her career for her family. She took maternity leave for her two children. She twice left JPL during her first few short periods of employment to assist with her better half's education before returning to JPL permanently in 1969. The " lack of appropriate child care options" made it difficult for Finley to balance her job and family obligations, even though she acknowledges that women still struggle with this issue today. One of her goals was to maintain a separation between her job and personal life, which she did by never bringing work into the house or "stirring late without making up that time at home." She cooked every meal for her family but put little effort into housekeeping. Then, because he was " age that didn't assist with the home or kiddies," her better half took another aim at the cars and the yard.
