Susan Frampton Biography

Dr. Susan Frampton has been the president of a nonprofit membership, consultation, and advocacy organization known as Planetree which works with an increasing network of hospitals and continued care communities around the world to carry out Planetree's broad patient-centered method of care for over a decade. She has written several publications, including The Patient-Centered Care Improvement Guide, The Long-Term Care Improvement Guide, a series on patient-centered care in The American Journal of Nursing, The International Health Federation Journal, and Putting Patients First, which won the ACHE Hamilton Book of the Year Award in 2004. The Putting Patients First Field Guide: Global Lessons in Designing and Implementing Patient-Centered Care, is her latest work which is a guide on how integrated healthcare systems around the world are functioning on the fundamental dimensions of a patient-centered culture, including access to patient advocacy, family involvement, healing environments, information, employee and physician engagement. Frampton was elected co-chair of the National Priorities Partnership in 2013 which was a joint effort of 52 major national organizations collaborating to identify strategies to improve the quality, safety and patient-centered outcomes of the US healthcare system. Her work with the NPP dates back to 2009, when she was first named a member. She worked on NPP's Better Care Subcommittee, which assisted in shaping a set of complete national goals to advance the quality of healthcare and health in 2011. She also was co-chair of the NPP (Re)admissions Action Team, which built and carried out strategies to safely lower avoidable readmissions and increase the uptake of patient-centered, team-based care delivery models. Frampton has also taken part in the Institute of Medicine's review panel for their 2009 publication on integrative medicine, the National Quality Forum's Care Coordination Steering Team, and the Joint Commission's Expert Advisory Panel on culturally competent patient-centered care standards. Dr. Susan Frampton has given keynotes on designing patient-centered practices in continuing care, acute care, and ambulatory medicine settings for different hospital associations, the Veterans Health Administration, and the World Health Organization. She was named by HealthLeaders magazine as of the 20 People Who Make Healthcare Better.
