She has worked as a volunteer leader with the Society for Human Resource Management, where she has held the positions of Director for Professional Development and State Director for the SHRM State Council of Rhode Island.

She participates in the Women's Fund of Rhode Island's RI-GAP Project as a committee member and is one of the two state representatives to Vision 2020, a 10-year initiative to achieve gender equality (a non-partisan effort to increase the number of women appointed by the governor to cabinet-level positions, boards and commissions).

With articles appearing in Conquistador, Paso Fino Horse World, Horseman's Yankee Pedlar, Horse Illustrated, and other equestrian journals, Susan is also a widely recognized authority on Paso Fino horses. German, French, and Spanish translations of her writings exist.
