The little daughter of free citrus growers chose to press natural products into bushel containers and serve freshly squeezed orange juice for onlookers beside Route 441. McCarthy, an English literature graduate of the University of South Florida, wrote the advertising copy for the city of Orlando's freshly built Walt Disney World. McCarthy then married a Californian and made San Diego his permanent home as a consultant following successful stints at McCann Erickson Advertising in Atlanta and San Francisco. McCarthy's writing career took a spectacular turn in 1991. A series of Orlando Sentinel news articles and a frightful letter from her father detail a development of shocking racial injustices that occurred in Florida in 1951–1952. The difficult relationship her father had with the FBI served as the inspiration for McCarthy's award-winning debut novel, Lay That Trumpet In Our Hands. Evident events that occurred in Lake County, Florida in 1954 served as the catalyst for the later book True Fires. According to Kirkus Reviews, the book paints a unique image of mid-century degradation and people brave enough to take risks for equity.
