The Hole in the Wall tests developed by educational analyst Dr. Sugata Mitra has shown that children may express themselves and one another without adult supervision or formal education if they are motivated by curiosity or friend intrigue. In 1999, Mitra and his collaborators dug a hole in a wall separating a New Delhi urban slum, installed an Internet-connected PC there, and left it (with a concealed camera shooting the region). They saw slum children tinkering with the computer, learning how to use it and browse the web while doing so, and then teaching one another. The Hole in the Wall project demonstrates that learning may occur through self-direction and knowledge given by friends even without any direct involvement from an instructor. Mitra, who is currently a professor of instructional innovation at Newcastle University in the UK, describes it as teaching that is seldom invasive. Sugata Mitra expressed a strong TED Prize request at TED2013: "Help me build a place where youngsters may discover and learn on their own — and show each other — using resources from the whole cloud." Normal educational practices consider students to be empty canisters that should be placed in a space and filled with curriculum material. Exams conducted by Dr. Mitra disprove that.
