Su’ad Abdul Khabeer Biography

Su'ad Abdul Khabeer is a researcher and dissident artisan who uses human sciences and execution to look at how race and established society overlap. At the University of Michigan, Su'ad is now a partner educator for American Culture and Arab and Muslim American Studies. She completed the Islamic Studies confirmation program of the Institute at Abu Nour University and received her Ph.D. in social human studies from Princeton University. She is also a graduate of the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University (Damascus). Her most recent book, Muslim Cool: Race Religion and Hip Hop in the United States, was published in 2016 by NYU Press. It is an ethnography on Islam and hip hop that examines how the intersections of Muslimness and Blackness question and repeat the meanings of race in the US. Su'ad's presentation ethnography Sampled: Beats of Muslim Life is included with her composed work on Islam and hip-hop. The performance under consideration is a one-lady solo meant to introduce and speak about her research and discoveries to many audiences as a key component of her responsibility to open scholarship. Su'ad oversees Sapelo Square, the primary website dedicated to the thorough documentation and analysis of the Black US American Muslim experience. She has also been on Al Jazeera English and has written for The Root, the Washington Post, the Atlantic, Ebony Magazine, the Huffington Post, and Trans/Missions. Su'ad is also a Senior Project Advisor for the New Muslim Cool documentary, which won a grant from US Public Television, and her poetry was featured in the collection Living Islam Out Loud: American Muslim Women Speak.
