Stuart Woods was born in the small Southern town of Manchester, Georgia, attended the local state-funded schools, and then graduated with a BA in humanities from the University of Georgia. He can't think of a reason. Following graduation, he spent a year in Atlanta and two months getting ready for the Air National Guard's "draft-dodger program," as he refers to it. He relocated to New York at that point in the 1960 harvest season in search of a composing job. Since there were no openings in the magazines and papers, he discovered a new career as a preparation program assistant at a marketing company, earning $70 per week. My secretary was receiving $80 a week, he explains, "and that's a component of my incentive to the company." With the exception of ten months when he joined John F. Kennedy in Mannheim, Germany, he spent most of the 1960s in New York. Woods, along with several other National Guardsmen, were ordered to Germany " to accomplish God comprehends what"," as he puts it after the Soviets had completed the construction of the Berlin Wall. "Fly a more than two-tonne truck all over the motorway," is what he claims to have done. He observes that all he ever flew in the Air Force was the truck. He came to London at the end of the 1960s and spent a significant amount of time there working in various public relations agencies. He came to the conclusion in the middle of 1973 that the time had come for him to write the novel he had been planning since he was eleven. He traveled to Ireland where a few buddies uncovered him a little level in the stableyard of a house in south County Galway and he sustained himself by working two days every week for a Dublin promotion company while he dealt with the novel. Around 100 pages into the novel at that moment, he discovered cruising, and "everything went to Hell. I just engaged in sailing."
