Steve Swanson Biography

Steve Swanson (Ph.D.) is a former NASA astronaut and designer. He flew two space transfer missions as well as one space station expedition. Swanson got a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics from the University of Colorado before going on to get a Master of Applied Science in Computer Systems from Florida Atlantic University. He aided his education by earning a Doctorate in Computer Science from Texas A&M. Swanson began working for NASA in 1987 as a structural designer and flight engineer on the Shuttle Training Aircraft. In 1998, he was chosen as a space tourist. Swanson's maiden mission occurred aboard Atlantis during STS-117, the 250th orbital human spaceflight. As Mission Specialist 2, he completed two spacewalks and worked both mechanical arms. STS-117 delivered the next Starboard Truss component (S3) to the International Space Station (ISS), as well as a slew of solar-powered displays. STS-117 was the most critical mission for Atlantis due of landing delays caused by the bad weather.
