Steve Chen Biography

Steve Chen is best known as YouTube's co-founder and chief technical officer. A year after its inception, YouTube ranked as the tenth most popular website, and Chen was nominated to Business 2.0 magazine's "The 50 People Who Matter Now" list in 2006. That same year, Google paid $1.64 billion in shares for YouTube. Chen was born in Taiwan and moved to the United States with his family when he was 15 years old. Chen worked for PayPal after graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he met Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim. YouTube, a service meant to facilitate online video sharing, was created by the three in 2005. YouTube soon became one of the fastest-growing websites on the internet, with over 1.9 billion users uploading 500 hours of video material every minute. Chen and Hurley founded AVOS Systems after selling Youtube to Google. AVOS Systems then purchased Delicious from Yahoo! Inc. On May 15, 2011, Asian Scientist Magazine named Chen one of the 15 Asian Scientists to Watch. Chen and Vijay Karunamurthy co-founded Nom.com, a live streaming food network, in 2016. In 2018, the Governor of Illinois admitted Chen as a Laureate of The Lincoln Academy of Illinois and gave him the Order of Lincoln (the state's highest honor).
