Since starting his studio in New York City in 1983, photographer Stephen Wilkes has created an incredible body of work and a reputation as one of America's most prominent photographers, well recognized for his engaging artwork publishing and commercial work. His photographs are recognized for their inclusion in the collections of the George Eastman Museum. James A. Michener Museum of Art Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Griffin Museum of Photography, Dow Jones Collection Snite Museum of Art Jewish Museum of New York Library of Congress The City of New York 9/11 Memorial Museum and several private collections comprise the Historic New Orleans Collection Museum. His articles have appeared in and on the covers of various publications, including the New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair Time Fortune National Geographic Sports Illustrated, and many more. Wilkes' early professional understandings of Mainland China, California's Highway One, and impressionistic ""Consumed Objects"" set the tone for a series of career-defining undertakings that propelled him to the forefront of the photographic world. In 1998, a one-day job on the south side of Ellis Island launched a 5-year photographic exploration of the island's long-abandoned clinical wards where immigrants were detained before being allowed to enter America. Wilkes' images and videos helped raise $6 million towards the reclamation of the island's south side. The work Ellis Island: Ghosts of Freedom was released in 2006 and was selected one of TIME magazine's 5 Best Photography Books of the Year. The work was also featured on NPR and CBS Sunday Morning."
