Stephen Wadsworth Biography

Stephen Wadsworth has coordinated at the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro Alla Scala, Royal Opera Covent Garden, Vienna Staatsoper, Nederlandse Opera, and the Edinburgh Festival, as well as in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Toronto, and Santa Fe. He made his Seattle Opera debut with Jenufa 29 years ago, and has since returned for the world premieres of Daron Hagen's Amelia (for which he also wrote the story), Iphignie en Tauride (a co-production with the Metropolitan Opera), Orphe et EurydiceXerxes, and Wagner's Lohengrin Der Fliegende H�lder and the Ring (2001, 2005, and 2009). Wadsworth has staged well-traveled productions of plays by Shakespeare, Moliere, Marivaux, Goldoni, Shaw, Wilde, and Coward. Wadsworth collaborated with Leonard Bernstein on the lyrics for the drama A Quiet Place and oversaw the world premieres of Daron Hagen's Shining Brow and Peter Lieberson's Ashoka's Dream, as well as new plays by Beth Henley and Anna Deavere Smith. He has decoded compositions for the theater by Monteverdi, Handel, and Mozart, among others. For his work on Molire and Marivaux, the French government made him a Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Wadsworth is the Director of Opera Studies at the Juilliard School and the James S. Marcus Faculty Fellow and Head of Dramatic Studies at the Metropolitan Opera's Lindemann Young Artists Development Program. He is a Grammy nominee, a Harman/Eisner Artist in Residence at the Aspen Institute, a 2013 Sundance Theater Lab writer, a Rainier Club Artist Laureate, and a Seattle Opera Artist of the Year."
