Stephen Starr, owner of STARR Restaurants, began working in the caf industry at the age of 21 when he founded his first club in an Old City burger shop called Grand Mom Minnie's, which offered food during the day and humor at night. Next, he created Stars, a men's club/caf� that featured artists that were just getting started, like as Jerry Seinfeld, Richard Belzer, and Pat Benatar. In order to enhance live entertainment, Starr created a larger venue, the Ripley Music Hall, which showcased fresh talent, for example, U2, The Eurythmics, Cyndi Lauper, and Bruce Springsteen, who were still young at the time. Inevitably, he founded The Concert Company in order to lure large-scale arena artists to Philadelphia. Starr was held accountable for notable concerts such as Madonna. George Michael, Lionel Ritchie, and others. When Electric Factory Concerts let him go in 1990, he used the opportunity to launch a few other places, including Shake Burger and Roll, a kitschy caf�; The Bank, a trendy dancing club that subsequently became District Nightclub; and Cafe Republic, a Russian-themed caviar and vodka bar.
