Stephen Paletta Biography

Stephen Paletta decided to commit his life to helping others even before he was picked as the greatest contributor on Oprah's Big Give, a charity reality TV show. Someone pushed him a few years ago, he recalls, to choose if my life would be about meaning or achievement. When he came to Rwanda in 2004, he got his answer - a journey that transformed his life. For the first time, he adds, he was "hands-on" and "attached to the misery of the poor and the Third World." The pictures and individuals I met would not enable me to just return to work and concentrate about generating my own money. As a consequence, Paletta and his family adopted and continue to raise 10 African children. He also founded The International Education Exchange, a non-profit organization that constructs schools and libraries in Africa and educates teachers. Paletta established a second nonprofit organization, Stephen's Journey Foundation, after winning Oprah's Big Give and receiving a million dollars. Stephen's Journey is devoted to bringing attention to social entrepreneurs across the world and the organizations they've created, as well as providing a resource for funders to identify successful, responsible grassroots nonprofit organizations. Aside from philanthropy, Paletta is a passionate family guy who is happily married to Christine. Paletta is most proud of his family, which consists of three children. Paletta received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Cornell University, where he was an All-American lacrosse player. Paletta worked in his family's general contracting firm after graduation before beginning his own in the same sector. He is now the CEO of Renaissance Integrated Solutions, a pipeline technology firm. Paletta adds, "I've been blessed with a lot of success." I thought Oprah's Big Give would encourage people to give back.
