Stephen Fried is an American investigative journalist, nonfiction author, and lecturer hailing from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He teaches advanced nonfiction, investigative reporting, and narrative medical, science, and history writing at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and the University of Pennsylvania. A two-time National Magazine Award winner, Fried began his career at Philadelphia magazine, where his article “Cradle to Grave” led to Marie Noe’s guilty plea in the deaths of her ten children.

His books include “Thing of Beauty: The Tragedy of Supermodel Gia” (1993), which coined the term “fashionista” and inspired an Emmy-winning HBO film; “Bitter Pills” (1998), exposing pharmaceutical industry risks; “The New Rabbi” (2002); “Husbandry” (2007); “Appetite for America” (2010), a bestselling biography of Fred Harvey; and “Rush” (2018), about Founding Father Benjamin Rush. Patrick Kennedy co-authored “A Common Struggle” (2015) and “Profiles in Mental Health Courage” (2024).
