Stefanos Zenios Biography

Stefanos Zenios is the Santa Barbara Investment Group Professor of Entrepreneurship and Operations, Information, and Technology. He is also the faculty director of the Stanford Graduate School of Business Center for Entrepreneurial Studies. Zenios, an inventive teacher and researcher, is the principal creator of Startup Garage, a popular GSB course that enables hundreds of Stanford GSB students and executives learn and apply the innovation processes at the heart of the Silicon Valley ecosystem each year. He also manages the Stanford GSB Venture Studio, a lively learning facility for Stanford graduate students from various disciplines who wish to learn about building and creating sustainable, high-impact companies by putting their classroom knowledge to the test. He previously established and co-taught Biodesign Innovation, a project-based course on creating and launching novel medical devices, and is one of the senior writers of the corresponding textbook. His research interests are divided into two categories: innovation and health care. He investigates how to explain innovation as a process with clear phases and precise consequences, and how the process differs depending on the industrial sector, consumer group, technology, and source of innovation (startup vs large organization). In addition, he pioneered the use of data and sophisticated modeling to enhance health care delivery and treatment choices, and he has received multiple best paper honors in his specialty of Operations Research. He investigates whether characteristics of health care companies are connected with successful exits at the interface of health care and innovation (either financial, generating returns for the investors, or clinical, securing FDA approval). He is also the Editor-in-Chief of Operations Research, a major academic magazine in his area.
