About Stanley Schmidt
Stanley Schmidt Biography
Stanley Schmidt was born in Cincinnati and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1966. While a graduate student at Case Western Reserve University, where he earned his Ph.D. in physics in 1969, he began publishing stories. He continued freelancing while an assistant professor at Heidelberg College in Ohio teaching physics astronomy science fiction and other curiosities. (A snake introduced him to his wife Joyce while he was teaching field biology in a location that resembled that well-known garden.) He has written tales and essays for anthologies and periodicals such as Analog Asimov's Fantasy & Science Fiction. Rigel Twilight Zone: Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine, American Journal of Physics, Camping Journal, Writer's Digest, and The Writer are just a few examples. He has edited or coedited many anthologies. He has been nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Professional Editor 31 times as the editor of Analog Science Fiction and Fact since 1978. He is or has been a member of the National Space Society's Board of Advisors and the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame, and has been a guest speaker at national meetings of those organizations, as well as the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the American Association of Physics Teachers, as well as numerous museums and universities. He relies on a diverse background in his writing and editing, including vast experience as a musician, photographer, traveler, naturalist, outdoorsman, pilot, and linguist. The majority of these inspirations may be found in his five books and short stories. His nonfiction books include Aliens and Alien Societies: A Writer's Guide to Creating Extraterrestrial Life-Forms and The Coming Convergence: The Surprising Ways Diverse Technologies Interact to Shape Our World and Change the Future, as well as hundreds of Analog editorials, some of which are collected in Which Way to the Future? He was the Guest of Honor at BucConeer, the 1998 World Science Work Convention in Baltimore, and his fiction has been nominated for Nebula and Hugo awards.
