Stanley McChrystal Biography

Stanley Allen McChrystal, who was born on August 14, 1954, is a former American military general. He is most famous for commanding the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) from 2003 to 2008, during which his organization was credited with killing Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of Al-Qaeda in Iraq. McChrystal's final job in the military was as the Commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and the Commander of the United States Forces - Afghanistan (USFOR-A).  Prior to this, McChrystal served as the Director of Joint Staff between August 2008 and June 2009. However, his tenure was not without controversy, as he was criticized for his alleged role in the cover-up of the friendly fire incident involving Pat Tillman. Despite this, McChrystal was reputed for voicing what other military leaders were thinking but hesitant to say, and this was one of the reasons he was chosen to lead all forces in Afghanistan. He held this position from June 15, 2009, to June 23, 2010.
