Stanley Love Biography

Stanley Love is a NASA astronaut and planetary scientist with 25 years of experience in impact physics, interplanetary dust, and chondrule formation. He is the first or co-author on more than 90 peer-reviewed technical publications and abstracts, including two in Science and two in Nature. While training to travel in space and serving as a crew member on Space Shuttle mission STS-122, he maintained a record of peer-reviewed publication in planetary science. He has approximately 1200 hours of flight experience, including zero- and reduced-gravity aircraft operations, as well as 15 hours of Extra-Vehicular Activity (spacewalking). He has participated in several NASA spaceflight analog programs that imitate geological exploration missions on the Moon, asteroids, and other solar system worlds in remote or harsh Earth regions. His analog work includes the creation of equipment for gathering geological samples in microgravity. He has participated in two 6-week Antarctic meteorite hunts. He is a co-inventor of the gravity tractor idea for changing the orbits of asteroids. Dr. Love appears regularly on television and in public to discuss space science and space travel to ordinary audiences. He possesses a third-degree black belt in Taekwondo and a pending patent on an unique manual control method for spaceships.
