Stacy Compton Biography

Stacy Compton, a native of Hurt, Virginia, established a solid foundation in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series, winning 36 races and earning 39 poles in seven years of Late Model Stock Car competition. In his nine years in karting, he also achieved over 100 victories and ten titles. Compton moved from an obscure short-tracker to a viable championship challenger and the circuit's best qualifier in two full seasons in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. He did make a surprise Winston Cup debut by qualifying tenth at Martinsville Speedway in 1996. In 1998, he won two truck races, placed seventh in the championship, and was crowned the series' most popular driver. Compton raced in three of the final four Winston Cup races in 1999 with the Melling team after finishing fourth in the Craftsman Truck Series with Impact Motorsports, where he had 17 top-10 finishes in 25 appearances. In 2001, Compton demonstrated his raw speed on NASCAR's restrictor plate courses by winning two Bud Poles at Talladega and starting on the outside of the first row for the Daytona 500. Compton finished seventh in the Busch Series championship chase in 2002, with 5 top-five and 11 top-10 finishes in 34 outings. He only had three DNFs all season. His attempts in the Winston Cup were not as fruitful. His highest finish in 19 starts was 18th at Martnisville in April. In July, he was fired by A.J. Foyt Racing, but in August, Melling Racing rehired him to drive its No. 92 Dodge.
