Stacey Vanek Smith Biography

Stacey Vanek Smith is the co-host of NPR's Planet Money show The Indicator. She is also a Planet Money correspondent, covering business and economics. Smith has followed economic stories down muddy back roads in Oklahoma to buy 100 barrels of oil, flown to Pune, India, to find the man who pitched the country's dramatic currency devaluation to the prime minister, and spoken with a North Korean woman who made a small fortune smuggling artificial sweetener in from China. Smith served as a journalist and fill-in anchor for Marketplace before joining NPR. While there, Smith worked on a project with The New York Times in which she investigated the link between money and marriage. She also appeared on Marketplace's live events, where she created a series of articles about how she had her data mined. Smith is an Idaho native who grew up on her parents' cattle ranch. She holds a bachelor's degree in comparative literature and creative writing from Princeton University. She also has a master's degree in broadcast journalism from Columbia.
