Srdja Popovic was one of the founders and primary organizers of the Otpor! Otpor! movement to topple Serbian President Slobodan Milosovic, which was successful in October 2000 when hundreds of thousands of demonstrators descended on and took over the Serbian Parliament, officially ending Milosevic's administration. Popovic was a member of the Serbian National Assembly from 2000 until 2003 after the revolution. Popovic and other ex-Otpor! activists founded the Centre for Applied Nonviolent Action and Strategies in 2003 as a non-profit educational organization (CANVAS). CANVAS has collaborated with people from 37 countries, including Zimbabwe, Burma, Iran, and Venezuela, to impart knowledge of nonviolent ideas and tactics utilized by the Serbian pro-democracy movement to non-democratic nations. CANVAS has collaborated with activists behind successful events such as the 2003 Georgian Rose Revolution and the 2004-2005 Ukrainian Orange Revolution. It also provided expertise to Lebanese activists in 2004 to resolve the issue following Prime Minister Harriri's killing, and it aided participants in the Maldives revolution in 2008.
