Spike Feresten Biography

Spike Feresten grew up in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, where he attended public school and worked as a bag boy at a local grocery. Feresten entered Berklee College of Music in Boston with the ambition of becoming the next Jimi Hendrix. Feresten was disillusioned with his profession decision one night, so he threw four-foot fluorescent light bulbs out the window of his dorm room, only to watch them shatter on the sidewalk eight storeys below. He was apprehended and evicted. After seeing David Letterman pull the same prank on his late-night talk show, Feresten realized that if network television promoted this type of conduct, he could have a career after all. As a result, a career in television humor was formed. Feresten rose through the television ranks, beginning as an intern at NBC in New York. When he worked as a receptionist for Saturday Night Live, he was tasked with passing jokes he had written to Weekend Update's Dennis Miller. Feresten's full-time career at SNL eventually led to a staff-writing post on Late Night with David Letterman in 1990, where he wrote for five years and received five Emmy nominations.
