Sonya Tayeh Biography

Sonya Tayeh is a Detroit, Michigan-based dance instructor and jazz and contemporary choreographer best recognized for her work on the television show So You Think You Can Dance. Tayeh was a house dancer during her adolescence and did not begin official dance instruction until she was 18 years old and a student at Wayne State University. She traveled to California after graduating in 2002 and operated a dance group in San Francisco, where she developed her own style of choreography, which she calls fight jazz. Soon after, she was found by a McDonald Selznick Associates talent agency who attended a performance she choreographed for The Carnival: Choreographer Ball. She landed a spot on So You Think You Can Dance three months after signing. Tayeh has choreographed for Madonna, Florence and the Machine, Kylie Minogue, the Los Angeles Ballet, and the San Jose Repertory Theater since breaking into the mainstream. Aside from theater and touring, she continues to teach jazz and contemporary lessons at dance conventions.
