Soman graduated from Columbia University's MFA Film Program and was awarded the school's top honor, the FMI Fellowship for Writing and Directing. DAVY & STU and KALI MA, his short films, have performed at over 150 international film festivals, received over 30 jury and audience prizes, and amassed over 1000000 YouTube views. His literary accomplishments include the Sun Valley Writer Fellowship and the prestigious Shasha Grant, which was given by a committee of worldwide cinema executives. Chainani earned a bachelor's degree in English and American literature from Harvard University before enrolling in the Columbia University film program. He studied fairy tales at Harvard and published his thesis on why terrible women make such alluring fairy-tale villains, receiving the Thomas Hoopes Prize and the Briggs Prize for his efforts.
