Skylar Kergil Biography

Skylar Kergil is a transgender singer-songwriter, activist, educator, writer, and artist from Acton, Massachusetts, who now lives in Boston. After high school, he attended Skidmore College, where he served on the board of the Pride Alliance, as a Peer Mentor, and as an active part of the community until graduating with honors and leadership awards on May 18, 2013. While majoring in Studio Art with a focus on drawing and photography, he also took classes and had interests in gender studies, environmental studies, philosophy, poetry, and biology. As of today, he is traveling to teach, working on his music, and writing a book on his journey from high school and college. He began recording his transition on YouTube in 2009, when he began hormone medication, under the moniker Skylark or Skylarkeleven. Skylar's transgender identity is not his only one, but it is the one that has shaped his enthusiasm for LGBT rights and community involvement. He has been invited to talk abroad on college and high school campuses as a result of his YouTube vlogs and written blogs; but, in order to continue his undergraduate career, he had to refuse the majority of these offers. He was a speaker at the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY, in the fall of 2012, which led to him becoming the main speaker at the fourth largest national Breaking the Silence Rally hosted by GLSEN in April of 2013. He has also spoken at campuses around the country, as well as the annual meeting of the American College Health Association. The New Yorker blog describes Skylar as an upbeat, articulate F.T.M., taking viewers through his initial physical and psychological changes on testosterone, interviews with his mother, post-surgical reports on his mastectomy and hysterectomy, and his life as a college student and aspiring musician four years later in an article titled Being Seen: YouTube Diaries of Transgender Youth. His project Re-humanizing the Transmasculine Community, which began as his senior thesis but has since continued, was described as "beyond sustainable" in an article by Trent Arthur Press. It breaks through barriers, ideas, and hopefully results in some really wonderful work. Outside of transgender advocacy, he is an enthusiastic reader and writer, as well as a singer-songwriter with an acoustic style, but others claim that passionate better characterizes it.
