Sinbad Biography

David Adkins graduated from the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado, where he lettered twice for basketball and earned the nickname "Red Chamberlain" owing to his fiery red hair and on-court antics. However, an injury cut short his athletic career. Adkins joined the United States Air Force as a boom operator after graduating from college. Adkins frequently performed stand-up comedy in downtown Wichita on his free days, even entering as a comic in the USAF Talent Contest in 1981. He later travelled with the United States Air Force Tops in Blue program, in which active members performed concerts all over the world. Life on base, however, was not all fun and games for the future stand-up comedian. Adkins was in denial after failing to make the Air Force basketball team while serving in the Air Force. He also went AWOL and engaged in a number of misbehaviors that almost resulted in a bad discharge and dismissal. After leaving the military, Adkins pursued his acting profession full-time. Under the stage name Sinbad, he began performing on the Los Angeles comedy nightclub circuit as well as competing on Star Search. Sinbad's appearance on Star Search led to cameo appearances on the short-lived comedy series The Redd Foxx Show and the Golden Globe-winning sitcom The Cosby Show.
