David Adkins graduated from the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado, where he lettered twice for basketball and earned the nickname "Red Chamberlain" owing to his fiery red hair and on-court antics. However, an injury cut short his athletic career. Adkins joined the United States Air Force as a boom operator after graduating from college.
Adkins frequently performed stand-up comedy in downtown Wichita on his free days, even entering as a comic in the USAF Talent Contest in 1981. He later travelled with the United States Air Force Tops in Blue program, in which active members performed concerts all over the world.
