Sinan Aral Biography

Sinan Aral is the David Austin Professor of Management at MIT Sloan, where he holds dual appointments in the IT and Marketing divisions and co-directs the Initiative on the Digital Economy. Sinan is a recognized specialist in the fields of social networks, social media, and digital strategy. He has worked directly with Facebook, Yahoo, Microsoft, the New York Times, IBM, Cisco, Intel, Oracle, SAP, and many other prominent Fortune 500 companies to realize economic value from their investments in social media and information technology. Sinan's research focuses on social contagion, product virality, and monitoring and controlling how huge social networks like Twitter and Facebook effect information worker productivity, consumer demand, and viral marketing. This study has received various honors, including a Microsoft Faculty Fellowship, a PopTech Science Fellowship, an NSF CAREER Award, and multiple Best Paper Awards. Poets Quants named him one of the "World's Top 40 Business School Professors Under 40" lately. Sinan was a Fulbright Scholar and served as Chief Scientist and on the board of directors of SocialAmp, a social commerce startup that allows social media targeting and peer recommendation (which was sold to Merkle in January, 2012). He is presently the Chief Scientist of Humin, a smart social navigation business building the Google Maps of your social world. He is also an organizer of the Workshop on Information in Networks (WIN) and the Conference on Digital Experimentation (CODE). Sinan graduated with honors from Northwestern University and holds master's degrees from the London School of Economics and Harvard University, as well as a PhD from MIT.
