Shuvo Roy Biography

Shuvo Roy, PhD, is a bioengineer who uses strong teamwork and a multidisciplinary approach to design medical devices that solve unmet clinical requirements. Dr. Roy is a professor at the Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences (BTS), which is a joint department of the UCSF Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine, and a faculty affiliate of the California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences (QB3). He is the director of the Mission Bay campus's Biodesign Laboratory. He is also the Technical Director of The Kidney Project and a founder of the UCSF Pediatric Device Consortium. He created and now teaches a course on medical device diagnostics and therapies, and he often talks to UCSF graduate students, as well as national and international academic and industrial audiences, on the medical device design process. He has over 100 articles to his credit, as well as three book chapters and many patents for device development. Roy co-directed the BioMEMS Laboratory at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, prior to joining UCSF in 2008. Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio, awarded him a BS degree magna cum laude in 1992 for triple majors in physics, mathematics, and computer science. He received his MS in electrical engineering and applied physics in 1995, and his PhD in electrical engineering and computer science in 2001, all from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
