Shirley Tilghman Biography

Shirley Tilghman is Princeton University's nineteenth president and the first woman to occupy the role. Tilghman was President of Princeton for fifteen years after serving on the faculty for fifteen years. A Canadian native Tilghman attended Queen's University and Temple University for his education. She is a world-renowned molecular biologist best recognized for her groundbreaking work in mammalian developmental genetics. She was a member of the National Research Council's committee that developed the framework for the United States' Human Genome Project endeavor, and she was a founding member of the National Advisory Council of the Human Genome Project Initiative for the National Institutes of Health. Tilghman was one of five women honored with the L'Oral-UNESCO Award for Women in Science in 2002. The next year, she earned the Society for Developmental Biology's Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2007, she was granted the Genetics Society of America Medal for excellent contributions to her area. Tilghman is an American Philosophical Society, National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine, and Royal Society of London member. She leads the Association of American Universities, is a trustee of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a director of Google Inc., and a trustee of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology.
