Shibley Telhami Biography

Shibley Telhami is the Anwar Sadat Professor of Peace and Development at the University of Maryland and a non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution's Saban Center. Prior to joining the University of Maryland, he taught at Cornell, Ohio State, and the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned his PhD in political science. Telhami has also been involved in international affairs, advising both Republican and Democratic governments on Middle Eastern issues. He worked as an advisor to the US Mission to the UN (1990-91), advised the State Department from 2009 to 2011, and was a member of the Iraq Study Group, among other things. He has written for the Washington Post, New York Times, and Los Angeles Times, and he appears on national and international radio and television on a daily basis. He specializes in US Middle East politics, particularly Gulf and Energy Security, Arab Public Opinion, and the Arab-Israeli Conflict. The World Through Arab Eyes: Arab Public Opinion and the Reshaping of the Middle East (single authored) and The Peace Puzzle: America's Quest for Arab Israeli Peace, 1989-2011 are Telhami's most recent publications (both 2013). (co-authored). His best-selling book, The Stakes: America in the Middle East (Westview Press, 2003; revised version, 2004), was named one of Foreign Affairs' top five Middle East books in 2003. Power and Leadership in International Bargaining: The Path to the Camp David Accords, International Organizations and Ethnic Conflict, Identity and Foreign Policy in the Middle East, and A Decade of Reflections on Peace are among his other books.
