Sherry Stringfield Biography

Sherry Stringfield was born in Colorado Springs as the oldest of three children, but she spent much of her childhood in Spring, Texas. She participated in both athletics and theater in high school. She later attended the Acting Conservatory at the State University of New York at Purchase, where she earned a B.F.A. in 1989. She shared a dorm room with Parker Posey while attending the State University of New York at Purchase. During this time, she appeared in a number of off-Broadway plays. She took a three-year contract as Blake in the daytime program Guiding Light after briefly working at a theater box office. She returned to Los Angeles after a brief hiatus to co-star as Laura Kelly on NYPD Blue. Stringfield is best known to television audiences worldwide for her role as Dr. Susan Lewis on NBC's hit medical drama ER, for which she received three Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, a Golden Globe nomination, and a People's Choice Award nomination for Favorite Female Performer. With 112 Emmy nominations over its tenure, the program has remained a critical and popular favorite. Autumn in New York, in which she co-starred with Richard Gere and Winona Ryder, and 54, in which she co-starred with Mike Myers. Ryan Phillippe and Salma Hayek.
