Shelley Long Biography

Shelley Long is best known for her role as Diane on Cheers. She attended Northwestern University after graduating from South Side High School in Fort Wayne, but left before graduating to pursue a career in acting and modeling. She joined The Second City comedy company in Chicago. She then began creating, producing, and co-hosting the famous television show Sorting It Out in 1975. The local NBC broadcast later won three Emmys for Best Entertainment Show. Her first significant appearance was in A Small Circle of Friends in 1980, with Brad Davis and Karen Allen. The documentary on social upheaval at Harvard University in the 1960s was a critical success, yet it remained largely unknown. In 1981, she co-starred with Dennis Quaid in the prehistoric Ringo Starr film Caveman. She also appeared in the Henry Winkler comedy Night Shift, about working the night shift at a local morgue, and in the 1983 comedy picture Losin' It with Tom Cruise. Long met securities dealer Bruce Tyson in 1979 while pursuing her acting career, and they married in October of 1981. Juliana, her daughter, was born on March 27, 1985.
